Dimensions: 3-5/8" H x 8-1/4" Dia.
Chinese Ming Dynasty Period, Wanli Wucai Dragon porcelain bowl. The porcelain potted with a shallow body, of a shallow vessel, with flaring opening lip, raised on a round slightly raised footing. All reserved hand painted ornamentations are rendered in clean white underglaze base color which contrast against the Wucai design color. Wucai or five-color shades and tones, brightly painted in Wucai design, Opaque colors around the exterior, between the filling motif decorated in colorful motif. The exterior adorned with several five claws imperial dragon soaring amidst flames and vapors, with face and upper right appendage outstretched toward the heavens. Vigorous dragons chasing flaming pearl amidst flames against vivid tones scrolling clouds diaper and scrolling ruyi. The backdrop depicts swirling wind and fire painted atop a beautiful white underglaze, enclosed banded with double fine blue rings lines on the upper mouth rim and the foot base. Dragon is the symbol of the Emperor, the Son of Heaven, eternity, Yang and Yin, male vigor and fecundity, the Li-Shui wave pattern which is known to be the abode of dragons. The color is balanced, elegant and exquisite. This inadvertently gave texture, energy, and shading to the design. The clay is very fine, with a brilliant glaze finish that was applied by a meticulous, the shape is uniformly proportioned.
