Description
Dimensions: 3-7/8" H x 6-1/8" Dia.

Chinese Ming Dynasty Period, Xuande blue and white phoenix porcelain bowl. The porcelain potted with a shallow body, of a shallow vessel, broad wide cavetto, with a wide flared lip and shallow draft, raised on a small round slightly raised footing. All reserved hand painted ornamentations are rendered in clean white underglaze base color which contrast against the cobalt blue fine color. The exterior adorned with Phoenix flying amidst scrolling ruyi clouds, tendril and Lotus flower blooms surround the surface. The Inner mouth rim decorated with scrolling ruyi and tendril enclosed with double fine blue rings lines. The Chinese phoenix is considered the representative of all feathered creatures. The phoenix is such an important bird in Chinese symbolism that we have a separate section dedicated to it, it is put in the same section as dragons as the phoenix and dragon are paired, the dragon represents the Emperor and yang, the phoenix the Empress and yin. To use the name phoenix is a bit misleading as there is no legend in China about reincarnation from ashes as there is about the Egyptian mythical bird. In China it was a god of the winds. The vermillion red phoenix represents the most important of directions - south. In symbolism the dragon and phoenix together represent a married couple. The phoenix alone is a symbol of joy and peace, it heralds the coming of auspicious days just like the qilin. The foot rim reveals the cut edges during the making process, and the receded central interior base left white underglaze. A characteristic heaped and piled effect, the underglaze grayish-blue concentrates in certain areas, bubbling through the surface of the glaze and turning a deep blue-black. This inadvertently gave texture, energy, and shading to the design. The underside unglazed, revealed the pale-creme ground and dark grayish brown spotted firing marks and edge-cut foot rim. The clay is very fine, with a brilliant glaze finish that was applied by a meticulous, the shape is uniformly proportioned.
