Rare Tabwa Anti-WitchCraft Staff with Ancestors Ex Ripa

Item Details

Description

This is a rare and old Tabwa Anti-Witchcraft staff. Staves of this sort were used by the Tabwa and documented by Dean Ripa in field photos as having being part of an Anti-Witchcraft cult. The chief diviner would lead a procession of the person affected by the witchcraft and use the cane, looking through the opening of the cane to spot violations of ancestral taboo. Field collected by Dean Ripa among the Tabwa and Rungu, C. 1979/1980. The Cane measures 32 x 4.25 inches and is a very rare and authentic example.
