Item Details

Description

A Very rare old eroded "Ekpu" Ancestor figure from the Ibibio peoples, Nigeria. Such idols were carved when a deceased member of the tribe was elevated to "Ancestor" status, and was cared for and protected by the oldest member of the tribe. This is a wonderful example with an inverted conical truncated headdress over a stylized oron face, partially damaged due to insect depredation. One arm lost, and damaged from the waist down. The figure measures 25 inches tall ( 27.25 inches tall on wood base) On a custom base.Provenance: Ex Collection Michael Wyman, Chicago, USA.
