Description
A diminutive carved wooden male effigy accented with kaolin clay mineral pigments and carved in an overall highly stylized though traditional form. Tadep figures embodied ancestors who according to the Mambila's beliefs are responsible for the clan's wealth. The figures were used in healing rituals and to deter thieves, though the uses varied widely according to the medicines and needs of the owner. Mambila peoples, Nigeria, Africa. The sculpture measures 6.5 inches tall. Provenance: The Dr Noble & Jean Endicott collection, New York.
