Description
A carved wood and painted "Uden Nyama" or fatting house doll from the cross river region of Nigeria, West Africa. This lovely wooden doll was given to young unwed girl at the time of entering the Ibibio fatting house by the Ebere Society, and carried by the girl throughout her initiation. The doll symbolizes the future child which she is expected to bear once married. The doll measures 9.75 inches tall ( 10.75 inches on base). Provenance: The Marshall Mount collection, New Jersey, 1998
