Description
Federal Period
Three Scarce Early Army "American Eagle" Design Buttons c 1792 First U.S. Army / General Anthony Wayne's Legion
c. 1792 Post Revolutionary War Federal Period, Lot of Three, Early "New" First United States Army "American Eagle" Design Buttons, General Anthony Wayne's Legionaries, Type Albert GI 25, Original Shanks, as shown Used / Good.
The first official units of the Federal United States Standing Army were authorized by Congress in 1791. They were developed by President George Washington, and Henry Knox as first Secretary of War, to be known as "The Legion of the United States." General "Mad" Anthony Wayne produced the original organizational outlines and structure, some based on units from the prior Continental Army. By midyear 1792 the first units were ready to be outfitted and prepared for training. Excavated, and about average in quality when located. Some edge loss these three scarce original buttons are well worn from actual use, and yet much of their designs including the central Heraldic American Eagle with Stars above can be clearly seen and each has its original shank attached, though as typical being pressed down. A good opportunity for historical button and United States Army collectors. (3 buttons)
