Description
This is a fascinating vintage wood sculpture from the Dogon peoples of Mali, West Africa. A highly stylized ancestral effigy featuring 2 Male and 2 female ancestors, all "bound" together in a circle. This image relates to the Nommo myth, how Nommo came from the Star sirius and when he landed, he divided into a male and female couple, and then again into 2 couples. The sculpture is well weathered and worn and has a encrusted and weathered surface.A very interesting and strong example of Dogon Arts. The figure measures 21.5 inches tall.
