Description
This is a very rare and quite large old wooden sculpture from the Dogon peoples of Mali, West Africa. A highly stylized ancestral effigy featuring a tall male ancestor holding one hand to the heavens and the other holding a long twisted snake , that wraps around the torso and base of the figure. This image relates to the Nommo myth, the sculpture is well weathered and worn and has a weathered surface, note the eroded base.A very interesting and strong example of Dogon Arts. It has become quite difficult to find such objects in the Dogon region these days. The figure measures 33 inches tall. ( 35.25 inches tall on professional custom display stand.
