Description
This is a vintage wooden sculpture from the Dogon peoples of Mali, West Africa. A highly stylized ancestral effigy featuring a female ancestor holding her hands to the heavens in a prayer for rain and to the planet of the Nommo. Of note, the female has a "False Beard" or this relates to hermaphrodite qualities and the legend of the Nommo splitting into males and females. This image relates to the Nommo myth, the sculpture is well weathered and worn and has an encrusted, note the eroded and decayed feet. There are old collection numbers painted on the back "F06A" It is unknown from what collection the figure originates. The figure measures 25 inches tall. ( 27.5 inches tall on professional custom display stand.)
