Description
This is a carved wooden shrine sculpture of a Nommo ancestor male & female couple shown seated and praying for rain, from the Dogon peoples of Mali, West Africa. Carved from a single piece of wood with an overall stylized form and style. Such figures like this represent the teachings of the Nommo, who taught the Dogon to raise their hands into the air toward the star Sirius to pray for rain to the water planet that they believe revolves around sirius. Weathered and encrusted surface. The sculpture measures 31.5 inches tall x 10 inches wide.
