Description
A very fine "sanza" or Thumb piano musical instrument in the form of a standing male figure, made of lightweight wood. Carved by the Azande peoples in the northern Congo. The hollow body of the figure constitutes the resonance box of the instrument. Mounted on flat front side are five slats made of wood (bamboo), which are plucked on their lower ends (hence ‘thumb piano’). Azande peoples, DRC/ Congo, Africa. The thumb piano measures 24 x 7.5 inches.
Condition
fair, well handled, the wooden slats are well worn and not much tone is still made.
