Description
A very rare "sanza" a Thumb piano musical instrument in the form of a standing female figure, made of lightweight wood, dyed dark brown. Carved by the Azande peoples in the northern Congo. The hollow body of the figure constitutes the resonance box of the instrument. Mounted on flat front side are five slats made of wood (bamboo), which are plucked on their lower ends (hence ‘thumb piano’). A very rare, unusual form of this instrument, with good, old usage patina. The thumb piano measures 22.5 x 7.5 inches.CONDITIONfair, well handled.
