The ‘Richmond Examiner’ was a Civil War-era American newspaper notable for being one of the few periodicals published in the Confederate capital. However, this newspaper was widely considered one of the most anti-Confederate newspapers and regularly opposed President Jefferson Davis.

This 1854 printing of the ‘semi-weekly’ edition of the Examiner was an important issue in that in covered the contents of what would become known as the Kansas-Nebraska Act – a bill that was proposed by Stephen Douglas which took on significant implications with American slavery. This edition also includes a description of Edmund Ruffin, a notable and high-profile Virginian slave owner.
