James R. Gilmore was a wealthy merchant and, under the name of Edmund Kirke, a well-known publicist of mildly emancipationist views. In the early years of the Civil War, he published several novels, containing realistic portrayals of Southern life and feeling, under the pen name Edmund Kirke.
‘Patriot boys and prison pictures’ is a collection of short stories separated into two parts, Patriot Boys and then Prison Pictures. Patriot Boys is four stories of four boys who are capture during the Civil War becoming prisoners of war but exemplified Northern Values. The second part is a collection of six stories of prisons to demonstrate once again the values of the North.
This 1866 first edition includes 22 black and white illustrations.
