1st Lt. James L. Avis was a soldier for the Confederate States Army during the U.S. Civil War, who began his career as a Private with the 5th Virginia Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Company K. He would later be promoted to 1st Lieutenant and serve under Capt. John Avis in “Avis' Company, Virginia Provost Guard.”
The 5th Virginia Volunteer Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment raised in Virginia for service in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. It fought in the Stonewall Brigade, mostly with the Army of Northern Virginia. The regiment was known as the "Fighting Fifth".
