Description
1889 Civil War CSA Marching to Victory Coffin Slavery Murder Illustrated MAPS

Charles Coffin’s ‘Marching to Victory’ is a 19th-century account of battles from the Civil War. This book describes specific battles and skirmishes giving special attention to guerilla and militia warfare with detailed descriptions of the movements and fortunes of each separate brigade. One instance of this is the Massacre of Lawrence in Missouri with troops burning houses, crops, farm animals, wagons, and all types of private property, murdering 183 people on their way without justice ever being served.

According to Larned,

“The greater part is necessarily taken up with an account of the military operations; but those civil events, both at home and abroad, directly connected with the war, are also intelligently treated. The author’s descriptions of the great battles, especially those of which he was an eyewitness, are exceedingly spirited. … Due credit has been given to the valor and patriotism of the Confederates, and , but for a few passages where the author’s feelings have got the better of his judgement, the book will give its readers a clear conception of the magnitude of the contest, and at the same time inspire in them a true pride in the men, both north and south, who fought it.”

This 1889 edition is complete with 150 black and white illustrations and maps of the different battles and engagements of the Civil War.
