3V Robert Boyle THE PHILOSOPHICAL WORKS OF THE HONOURABLE ROBERT BOYLE 1725 First Edition Antique Chemistry Physics Natural History Pneumatics Medicine Folding Plates Leather Binding

Title: The Philosophical Works of the Honourable Robert Boyle Esq; Abridged, Methodized, and Disposed Under the General Heads of Physics, Statics, Pneumatics, Natural History, Chemistry, and Medicine.
Author: Robert Boyle - Robert William Boyle FRS was an Anglo-Irish natural philosopher, chemist, physicist and inventor born in Lismore, County Waterford, Ireland. Boyle is largely regarded today as the first modern chemist, and therefore one of the founders of modern chemistry, and one of the pioneers of modern experimental scientific method. He is best known for Boyle's law, which describes the inversely proportional relationship between the absolute pressure and volume of a gas, if the temperature is kept constant within a closed system. Among his works, The Sceptical Chymist is seen as a cornerstone book in the field of chemistry. He was a devout and pious Anglican and is noted for his writings in theology.
Publisher: Printed for W. and J. Innys, J. Osborn, and T. Longman
City: London
Year: 1725
Printing Information: First Edition
Binding Style: Hardcover
Number of Volumes: 3 Full Set: Yes
Width: 7.5" Height: 9.25"
Book Details: This antique three-volume set is the first edition of this important collection. From the preface: " A well digested, compendious collection of all Mr. Boyle's philosophical writings, has been generally wished for,l and declared, by unexceptionable judges, to be greatly wanting."

This set is bound in full leather, each volume with five raised bands, a brown leather spine label, and gilt lettering to the spine. The text is adorned with 21 well-preserved folding engraved plates.
Condition / Notes: These handsome, large antique volumes show beautifully with a rich patina to the leather and some external age/wear, concentrated at the extremities. The boards are all attached, with some surface cracking to some hinges. The text blocks are secure. Bookplates and toning are present to the front paste-downs. Insect damage is present in Volumes I and III, some of which has been capably repaired. The interiors are generally clean and bright, with some scattered occasional toning/marks.

These volumes have been collated. In the first volume, page 17 is mis-labeled as 71, and page 351 as 367. The volume has several pagination jumps, as follows: 1-136, followed by 129-152, then 151-158, followed by 161-350, followed by 367-end. In each case, the text appears continuous despite the jump in pagination. This volume contains one folding plate, and has an insect hole from page 215-end, not obscuring the text. Page 571 displays ink smudging.

Volume II shows small tears to the top of page 577, and contains 19 folding plates, with plates XVI and XVII out of order. Volume III displays scattered insect damage in the margins, only obscuring page numbers in the index, at the rear of the volume. Page 441 is mis-labeled as 431, and the volume contains one folding plate.
