Description
A lovely antique Wooden mask from the Tabwa peoples, Congo, Africa. A very finely carved example of a face mask. Very little is known about the various types of masks used by the Tabwa and their function. This mask may belong to the type known as "moussangwe" . According to literature, this type of human mask represents the female character, and another type, the buffalo mask represents the male character in a mask pair used in fertility rites for sterile women who are forced to drink some of the sap of the tree (Erythrina abyssinica) from which the masks are carved.Note the deep well handled interior surface, worn regalia holes and well worn edges. The interior patina suggests actual field use and wear. The mask itself measures 11.5 inches x 7 inches, I will also include a metal display stand. Ex Private Philadelphia, PA Collection.
