Description
This is an old hand carved wooden mask from the Biombo Peoples, Congo / DRC , Africa. Masks of this type are known as "Tshimwana" which were used during Initiation festivals. The mask was decorated with many precise linear and geometric designs. The Biombo have been strongly influenced politically and culturally by their neighbors to the north, the Kuba. Like Kuba masks, Biombo masks are worn at funerals and initiations. Masks in both traditions have large slit eyes and painted geometric patterns on the forehead, cheeks and chin. The muted red color seen here is more characteristic of Biombo masks, however. The mask measures 14 x 8 inches. * Note their are several hand drilled attachment holes, a smooth and worn interior and original pigment, this mask has genuine age. The mask will hang nicely on the wall, or if you wish, we can include a display stand for an additional $34.00.
