Description
This African Dan-Bete Gre Mask is a rare and exquisite piece of tribal art from Ivory Coast. Vintage around 30 to 60 years old. Hand carved from one piece of solid wood. This particular type of mask, known as Gre or Nyabwa, features exaggerated facial features such as a large protruding mouth, facial protuberances, and an elongated nose resembling a bird. Traditionally, it was used during ceremonies marking the end of conflicts and for sessions of customary justice. It was also worn by warriors to instill fear and provide magical protection in battle.
