Description
A very rare old wooden mask from the Kumu peoples, Congo / DRC, Africa. KUMU masks, called "nsembu" or "ibole", which appear in paired dances that contrast male and female roles during initiations into the secret "nkunda" divination society. Carved wood with an archaic and primitive style, linear decoration and evidence that wooden teeth were once attached, now long gone. The mask interior and edges all show wear and handling, suggesting ceremonial use. A high quality professional display stand is included. the mask itself measures 9.5 inches tall, on base it is 13 inches tall. Ex~ Collection Artist Alfred Decredico, Rhode island, USA.
