Description
A choice Greek red-figure Lekanis with painted lid, Apulia, 4th Century BC, the lid with beautiful renderings of a head of a woman, her hair pulled back on a sakkos, wearing earrings and a pearl necklace. The features are of outstanding quality and separated from one another by palmette device. The tall knob handle is well-formed with black banding and a central device featuring radiating tongues. The lower part of the vessel in entirely glazed black with two horizontal loop handles. W: 10 1/4 in (25 cm); H: 7 1/2 in (18.9 cm). A well-preserved and very attractive example!
