Description
1845 Ethan Allen Captivity TORTURE American Revolution England Voyages
Ethan Allen was an early American figure known for his involvement in the founding of the state of Vermont and the American Revolutionary War.
‘Allen’s Captivity’ is a rare, 19th-century account of Allen’s capture by the British in May of 1775- May 1778. In this biography of his own life, Allen recounts his capture, his time and treatment in captivity among the Royal Navy ships and in England, and his release from captivity as a prisoner exchange. Allen recounts his physical and psychological torture treatment from the British, particularly prisoner destruction, encounters with people in England, Ireland, and New York, and his report to George Washington upon release. An interesting work published in 1845 depicting Allen’s own story.
