Description
1781 1st ed American Revolution Raynal Taxation Thomas Paine RARE
A rare French edition of Raynal’s ‘Revolution in America’! This 1781 edition includes Raynal’s views on the motivation and foundation of American independence. Raynal claimed that America’s desire for independence came from the refusal to pay English taxes rather than abide by the principles of a democratic government. This treatise incited instant response from notable American politicians including Thomas Paine. Paine published a letter addressed to Raynal in which he noted all of the mistakes in Raynal’s theory.
According to Larned, this work
“states in brief from the leading facts from 1763 to 1778. Discusses, after the manner of the time, the claims of both parties. Interesting from its point of view.”
This Dublin edition was published the same year as the first Paris edition.
