Description
1848 Last of the Fairies Children Fairy Tale Illustrated FANTASY Magic Mythology
George James was advised by Walter Scott to start a literary career after he wrote his first novel, 'Richelieu: A Tale of France'. He was also appointed Historiographer Royal to William IV, an appointment which made him the official chronicler of the court and monarch.
'The Last of the Fairies' is a charming children's tale about fairies, with colorful boarders to each page. Illustrated from designs by John Gilbert, engraved by Henry Vizetelly. Gilbert was a Romantic painter, who illustrated editions of Shakespeare and Walter Scott. He often painted medieval or magical watercolors. Vizetelly was originally apprenticed as a wood engraver, before going on to become a publisher and writer.
