Author: William Dodd - William Dodd was an English Anglican clergyman and a man of letters. He lived extravagantly, and was nicknamed the "Macaroni Parson". He dabbled in forgery in an effort to clear his debts, was caught, convicted, and, despite a public campaign for a Royal pardon, became the last person to be hanged at Tyburn for forgery.

City: London
Year: 1770
Binding Style: Hardcover
Number of Volumes: 3 Full Set: Yes
Width: 11.5" Height: 18.5"
Book Details: This antique three volume folio set is bound in quarter leather and marbled paper-covered boards with leather-tipped corners. The spines have raised bands and stamped gilt lettering. Each volume has marbled endpapers. This work is illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of John Locke in the first volume.
These volumes contain extensive marginalia written with a period fountain pen in red ink in Hebrew and Greek, as well as in pencil.

John Locke FRS (29 August 1632 – 28 October 1704) was an English philosopher and physician, widely regarded as one of the most influential of Enlightenment thinkers and commonly known as the "Father of Liberalism". Considered one of the first of the British empiricists, following the tradition of Sir Francis Bacon, he is equally important to social contract theory. His work greatly affected the development of epistemology and political philosophy. His writings influenced Voltaire and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, many Scottish Enlightenment thinkers, as well as the American revolutionaries. Locke’s contributions to classical republicanism and liberal theory are reflected in the United States Declaration of Independence.

Daniel Cosgrove Waterland (14 February 1683 – 23 December 1740) was an English theologian. He became Master of Magdalene College, Cambridge in 1714, Chancellor of the Diocese of York in 1722, and Archdeacon of Middlesex in 1730. Waterland opposed the latitudinarians of his time. He was an acute controversialist on behalf of the orthodox doctrine of the Trinity, on which he wrote several treatises. He was also the author of a “History of the Athanasian Creed” (1724).

Condition / Notes: This handsomely bound antique set shows external wear, with cracking to the spine edges, and rubbing to covers. Minor loss of material is visible at the corners. The boards of the first volume are loosely attached. Previous owners' names can be seen at the top edge of the preliminary pages, including the title page. The pages exhibit occasional light foxing and extensive marginalia in red ink and pencil, written in Hebrew and Greek. Two pages in the third volume have ink staining, with the texts marginally affected.
