Author: Jeremy Collier - Jeremy Collier was an English theatre critic, non-juror bishop and theologian. Collier's copious writings included the second English edition of Louis Moréri's Grand Dictionnaire Historique. The first English edition of this famous encyclopaedia was published in 1694 under the title The Great Historical, Geographical, Genealogical and Poetical Dictionary. Collier greatly enlarged and revised this work in 1701 (2 volumes) with 2 supplementary volumes following 1705 and 1721. It became a precursor to later encyclopaedic works, such as that of Ephraim Chambers.

Book Details: This antique two-volume set is bound in half leather and cloth-covered boards with raised bands on the spine. The work is a dictionary of "Curious Miscellany." Subjects include "the Apostles, Fathers, and Doctors of the Church; Of Popes, Cardinals, Bishops, & c. Of Heresiarchs and Schismatiks, with an Account of their Principal Doctrines; Of Emperors, Kings, Illustrious Princes, and Great Generals," among others listed. Volume 1 is adorned with an engraved portrait frontispiece of Collier.
Condition / Notes: This handsome antique set shows well with some indications of age and wear including shelfwear and light rubbing. The initial pages of volume 1, including the title page, have been reinforced with sections of the pages re-backed with paper and text handwritten where it has been obstructed. Text is clear and legible through mild to moderate age toning in both volumes.
