Description
1876 BUBONIC PLAGUE 1ed DEFOE Journal Year 1665 + Great London Fire 1666 RARE
“A Journal of the Plague Year” by Daniel Defoe is a historical narrative that gives a detailed account of the Great Plague of London in 1665. Even though Defoe was just a child during the actual events, the book is presented as an eyewitness account, capturing the chaos and despair of the city. The text explores the devastating effects of the plague, the isolation of infected houses, and the overwhelming impact on Londons population, using specific locations to enhance realism. The volume also includes “Some Account of the Great Fire in London, in 1666” by Gideon Harvey, complemented by an appendix with the Earl of Clarendons account of the fire. This part narrates the catastrophic fire that razed much of London, detailing the spread of the flames, the failure of initial firefighting efforts, and the ultimate triumph in quelling the blaze.
Illustrated by the esteemed George Cruikshank, each portion of this edition includes 4 engraved plates as well as Edward Wedlake Brayleys historical notes for context, ensuring accuracy.
