Description
Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Guangala culture, ca. 400 BCE to 200 CE. A hand-built pottery stamp of a sizable form with a rectangular body and a conical handle on the verso. The face of the stamp is adorned with two abstract feline figures - each facing one another with plump bodies, sinuous tails with bushy tips, circular eyes, pointed ears, and bared fangs - surrounded by a raised exterior border detailed with impressed circular dots and incised zigzagging linear motifs. Traces of original red pigment are still visible around the peripheries. Size: 4.625" L x 3.125" W (11.7 cm x 7.9 cm).

Small nicks to handle, stamp face, and peripheries, with softening to some finer details, and fading to areas of pigmentation, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits throughout.
