Description
Greece, Southern Italy region, ca. 4th to 3rd century BCE. A large and prettily painted amphora of the belly amphora style, with a body that flows into its neck and a rolled rim. Twin flattened cylinder handles rise from the shoulders to join just below the rim. The base has a flat foot and the body is painted with black and dark brown/red designs. These designs are floral and leaf-like. South Italian pottery was produced both for domestic use and exported to Greece. An amphora like this one was probably made specifically to be placed into a grave. A nice example in good condition. Size: 8.75" W x 14" H (22.2 cm x 35.6 cm)
