Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Daunia, ca. 6th to 5th century BCE. A stunning Daunian pottery krater with a large, rounded body, a broad funnel rim, and twin upraised handles, all upon a flared, pedestal foot. This entire form is covered with hand-painted linear bands and horizontal registers of vegetal motifs in hues of cream and orange. As early as the 6th century BCE, Daunia was an extremely wealthy region as is evidenced by the rich grave goods from the urban centers of Canosa, Arpi, and Salapia among others. Daunian pottery while somewhat more rustic compared to black glazed and red figure South Italic Greek pottery is characterized by voluminous rounded forms with striking geometric and linear patterns in earthen tones, just as we see in this intriguing example. Cork pads and collection label on base, as well as collection number inscribed on base. Slight wobble to base. Expected nicks and abrasions throughout, commensurate with ate. Chips to rim. Otherwise, excellent with nice earthen deposits and impressive remaining pigments.
