Description
South America, Peru, Upper/Western Amazon Basin, Ucayali River, Shipibo peoples, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A large hand-built ceramic vessel with a flat base, a wide body with a rounded shoulder, a tall, tapering neck, and a flared rim. The lower body is decorated with red slip pigment, and thin black and red linear details create a labyrinthine motif atop the cream-hued ground. A short inscription is painted in black along the interior rim which reads "ALICIA OH CARE U CREDO DE AMU." Shipibo vessels stemmed from the ancient Marajoara pottery tradition and are visually distinctive and instantly recognizable. They are also the result of tempering technology that is millennia old and allowed them to create some of the largest, thinnest-walled vessels produced in the New World. These vessels are made by Shipibo women as are their fantastic textiles. Size: 12.9" W x 8.4" H (32.8 cm x 21.3 cm).
