Description
Ca. 1900, 152 x 101 cm, North East Persia, Khorasan
Due to the Persian Herati design in the blue field and the border ornamentation derived from Khorasan models – large rosettes and sickle leaves on a light red ground – rugs of this kind from the Ferdows area are also known as "Herati Baluch". Comparatively coarse in knotting structure, using a wool warp and a palette uncharacteristically light for Baluch weavings, they could also be products of the Kurds living in North East Persia as neighbours of the Baluch. – Good condition, the original selvedges survive.
HALI 30, ill. p. 93 *** MacDONALD, BRIAN W., Tribal Rugs. Treasures of the Black Tent. Woodbridge 1997, pl. 157
