Description
Late 19th century, 89 x 77 cm, North East Persia, Khorasan
Formerly part of a khorjin, this bag face displays 24 birds arranged in rows and a border of highly abstract tree forms which appear like skeletons of fish. The birds are often interpreted as peacocks. They are woven in dark colours, except for one white bird which stands out as an eye-catcher. Finely woven and with a velvety pile, this bag face is an example of high quality. – Full pile preserved, only some areas of moth damage. Good condition, includes the original selvedges, the upper closure band and a brocaded decorative stripe at the bottom. Small repiled areas along the vertical sides.
