Description
Late 19th century, 137 x 78 cm, North East Persia, Khorasan
In the camel field, fourteen delicately drawn trees-of-life are arranged in three offset rows beneath a bridge-shaped arch, with many miniature animals and tiny blossoms interspersed between them. Compositions using a large number of trees are rarely encountered in Baluch prayer rugs. The high quality of this example is striking – a fine weave, pile wool of a silky lustre and meticulously woven kilim finishes. Herrmann published the prayer rug in 1988, attributing it to the Qa'inat region. – Small repaired areas, otherwise in very good condition.
HOUSEGO, JENNY, Tribal Rugs. An introduction to the Weavings of the tribes of Iran. London 1978, pl. 125
HERRMANN, EBERHART, Seltene Orientteppiche X. Munich 1988, no. 89
