Egypt, Alexandria, Ptolemaic to early Roman period, ca. 3rd century BCE to 1st century CE. Two terracotta redware fragments from the ancient Egyptian city of Alexandria. The smaller fragment displays the god Serapis, the Graeco-Egyptian god representative of the two deities Osiris and Apis, who is flanked by a star on his right and a waxing crescent moon on his left. The larger fragment is part of the shoulders of a fine red-slip pottery vessel with a lustrous russet hue, repeating curvilinear motif with two rows of dots underneath, and a delicate vine-and-leaf pattern beneath that. A mysterious yet beautiful reminder of ancient craftsmanship! Size of smaller fragment: 2.125" W x 2" H (5.4 cm x 5.1 cm); Size of larger fragment: 3.25" W x 2.25" H (8.3 cm x 5.7 cm).

Condition
Both items are fragments of larger objects. Smaller fragment displays minor wear to details, but has great mineral deposits on reverse. Larger fragment has minor earthen and mineral deposits and cracking to slip material, otherwise very good details and age marks.
