Greek Cypriot Black-on-White Milk Bowl
Greek Cypriot Black-on-White Milk Bowl
Item Details
Description
Ancient Greece, Cyprus, late Cypriot II, ca. 1450 to 1400 BCE. A rounded terracotta bowl with a wishbone-shaped handle and black-on-white painted geometric motifs on the exterior and on the handle. Bowls like these were formed by shaping them over a gourd. They were likely hung on walls for display and were widely exported. Size: 9.2" L x 7" W x 4.4" H (23.4 cm x 17.8 cm x 11.2 cm)

The method in which they were made is interesting, because wheel made pottery was also available in the Mediterranean at the time. This suggests a demand for hand-made wares. Some scholars have theorized that they were desirable because they had impermeable surfaces that made them ideal for holding hot liquids, like milk.

Provenance: Ex- private collection of James Farmer, Maryland
