Item Details
Description
Oceania, Australia, probably western Arnhem Land, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. An incredible sheet of eucalyptus bark painted using natural pigments to depict a large fish, its body composed of dramatic diagonal red and white cross-hatched striations, a red on white dotted head, tail, and fins - all against a red ground. An incredibly colorful and visually exciting piece of art executed in the traditional style of West Arnhem Land, which is part of the oldest continuous tradition of painting (from rock art to bark) known in the world. The colors are created from the ocher that is naturally occurring in the region. Size: 23" W x 11.5" H (58.4 cm x 29.2 cm); 29.5" W x 18.375" H (74.9 cm x 46.7 cm) including framing
