Description
Jacky Namadali (Australian, second half of the 20th century CE), Oceania, Australia, Arnhem Land, ca. late 20th century CE. A fantastic sheet of eucalyptus bark incised and painted using natural pigments to create a kumoken (crocodile) and a huge fish. This painting was done in the traditional style of West Arnhem Land, which is part of the oldest continuous tradition of painting (from rock art to bark) known in the world. The colors are created from the ocher that is naturally occurring in the region. The heads, legs, fins, and fish tail are white-outlined, filled in with black; otherwise, the centers of the body are filled with tightly cross-hatched yellow and white lines. The background of the bark is stained a dark reddish brown. Signed on the back. Size: 16.55" W x 32.75" H (42 cm x 83.2 cm)
