Description
Andrew Warorrga (spelling may be slightly off, signature on verso is very hard to read) (Australian, ca. second half of the 20th century CE), clan Wurrbarn, Central Arnhem Land, ca. late 20th century CE. A sheet of eucalyptus bark incised and painted using natural pigments, featuring a file snake (kedjebe) and the Rainbow Serpent (ngalyod) with water lilies. On the dark red background, the animals' bodies are red, black, yellow, and white. The file snake is an important source of food for people in Arnhem Land. The Rainbow Serpent is one of the most powerful mythological figures in Aboriginal art, an Ancestral Being always painted with supernatural qualities. Signature and description on the back. Size: 10.3" W x 29.75" H (26.2 cm x 75.6 cm)
Provenance: ex-private Tucson, Arizona, USA collection; ex-Ron Perry collection; Ron Perry collected art and artifacts for more than 40 years in New Guinea and the South Pacific. He collaborated with Carolyn Leigh to write a book entitled, "Art Dealer in the Last Unknown: Ron Perry & New Guinea Art: the early years 1964-1972" (2011)
