Description:
Printed map. 58.5x61.5 cm (23x24¼"), folding.
Rare cadastral map covering the area generally bounded by Solano, Alameda, Spruce, Rose, Josephine, Sonoma and Tulare. With inset "Outline map of Berkeley showing 1. comparative distances from center of city, 2. all lines of transportation, local & suburban." By 1908, Northbrae was subdivided by Mason-McDuffie Co and by Realty Syndicate. Developer Duncan McDuffie was the brains behind Northbrae. A conservationist who favored single-family houses on tree-lined streets in a park-like setting, his initial plans for the area were influenced by the local Chamber of Commerce's proposal to move the state capitol to Berkeley. McDuffie is best known for developing the Claremont and Northbrae neighborhoods of Berkeley and St. Francis Wood district in San Francisco. OCLC/WorldCat lists three examples of this map, one giving date as 1902 (at the University of California Berkeley) and two giving the date as 1909 (at UC Berkeley and the California Historical Society).
