Description
Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Sepik River region, ca. mid 20th century CE. A huge wooden spear with a secondary double spike at the base of the large spike. Below that is an anthropomorphic head with classically Papuan features, including a long, owl-beak-like nose. Below the flared neck of the head is a round disc carved with bands of wave-like symbols. Below that is a long, gently tapering, cylindrical handle that ends in a slightly flared butt. Another band of wave-like decoration is about two-thirds of the way down the handle. Two painted dark red leather straps are tied to the sides of the head, giving an appearance of hair. Remains of green, white, and red pigment Size: 2.75" W x 76.5" H (7 cm x 194.3 cm); 80" H (203.2 cm) on included custom stand.
