Rare PNG Murik Lakes Wood Mosquito Mask
Rare PNG Murik Lakes Wood Mosquito Mask
Item Details
Description
Papua New Guinea, Murik Lakes region, first quarter of the 20th century CE. Rare and quite exceptional carved wooden mask from the lower Sepik River. Long carved wooden panel with large raised forehead and exceptionally long mosquito-like "probiscus." Slit eyes raised at the outer edges. Wonderful example! Masks were a central part of religious practice for males in this region, and dance masks like this one represented powerful spirits. The eye holes on this mask suggest that it was meant to be worn rather than displayed; it would have had a basket framework that was placed over the wearer's head before engaging in any masquerades. There is a similar piece held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Size: 7.25" W x 25.5" H (18.4 cm x 64.8 cm)

Provenance: Ex- Adeon Gallery, Nick Poolos, Chicago, IL acquired before 1970.
