Description
1634 Saint Francis de Sales MYSTICISM Geneva Catholic vs Protestant Reformation
“Be who you are and be that well.”
― Francis de Sales
Francis de Sales was a 16th-century Catholic bishop from Geneva and was a voice of reason during the unrest caused by the Protestant Reformation. Many of his treaties were highly influential, particularly to those studying Mysticism. He and his writings were popular in both Protestant and Catholic circles, much in part to his works serving as guides to moral living and spiritual devotion, rather than focusing on religious doctrine. In his most famous work ‘Devout Life’, De Sales states,“My purpose is to instruct those who live in town, within families, or at court, and are obliged to live an ordinary life as to outward appearances.”
He also published a number of highly valuable letters on spiritual guidance and direction which were collected under the title “Letters of Spiritual Direction”.
