Description
**Originally Listed At $400**
Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 205 BCE to 125 CE. A hand-built and highly-burnished human effigy vessel of a seated man with a quasi-cylindrical body and a projecting ovoid head with a spout emerging from behind the head. The visage is elaborately decorated with a trophy-head-adorned headband which frames his face along with a thin chin strap, and two painted arms extend from a thick neck. A pair of wiry wings embellish the verso, flanking either side of a now-missing strap handle. While most of the details are painted in a polychrome scheme of espresso, citrine, burgundy, wheat, and toffee, the legs and arms are slightly three-dimensional due to intended bulges in the pottery. Figural forms like this example are relatively rare in Nazca art, making this a special vessel indeed! Size: 8.75" H (22.2 cm).
Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection
