Description
Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 200 to 300 CE. An elegant polychrome figural vessel depicting a kneeling woman holding ritualistic implements or perhaps abstract representations of sea creatures in her hands, her femine visage donning a turban-like headdress that is attached to the spout via a flat strap handle, her back adorned with twin depictions of a mythical animorphic deity, probably feline inspired. The fine line painting on this piece is most impressive, demonstrating the utmost workmanship and attention to detail. For instance, on the underside of this vessel one can see that the artist actually painted the figure's legs rather than merely suggest their presence with the figure's kneeling pose. What's more, the painstaking application of that beautiful repeated circular pattern adorning her lower garment is quite remarkable, and let's not overlook the meticulously delineated mythological creatures on her back, so carefully executed in chocolate brown, red, tan, and white hues. Simply an exquisite example of Nazca artistry. Size: 4.375" W x 6.75" H (11.1 cm x 17.1 cm)
