Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 100 BCE to 400 CE. A nicely preserved, hand-built pottery vessel of a relatively spherical form bearing a stylized anthropomorphic effigy along the front face. The vessel presents with a round but stable base, a rotund body with a sloped shoulder, a conical back spout behind a head-shaped frontal spout, and a strap handle bridging between the two spouts. The front of the vessel features painted arms with white nail beds, a zigzagging white band with black spots, and a pair of black fish flanking the front legs of a white and black bovine relief creature with a suspension loop under the body. The head spout bears a protruding nose centered between baggy eyes and full lips, and a black coiffure surrounds the spout mouth. The verso is decorated with dense vertical stripes in hues of burgundy, peach, cream, and chocolate. Size: 5" Diameter x 6.4" H (12.7 cm x 16.3 cm)
