Roman Bronze / Iron Steelyard Scale Cross-Beam
Item Details
Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A steelyard (statera) balance scale cross beam, consisting of a rectangular beam with a rounded terminal on one end and a zoomorphic terminal on the other. An iron bar with two rivets projecting from it connects the animal head - which looks like a boar - to the main part of the cross beam. The beam is incised with symbols to denote weight. Steelyard balances were used to weight loads by moving a counterweight along the beam until it balanced and then reading the incised numeral. Vitruvius describes them and their function in his De Architectura, Book X, 3-4. Size: 18.05" W x 0.9" H (45.8 cm x 2.3 cm); 3.4" H (8.6 cm) on included custom stand.
