Description
8th century BC-11th century AD. A mixed group of five implements comprising: a Roman bronze surgical or other implement with tapering shaft, a Roman iron single-edged knife comprising an iron blade with scooped tip, an hand-forged single-edged iron blade with gently curved back and ring-tang hilt, a bronze knife blade with scooped single-edge and rectangular handle, a bronze Iron Age shaped knife with remains of openwork handle. See for the medieval knife Capwell, Dr. T. Knives, Daggers and Bayonets, London, 2009; see Milne, J.S., Surgical Instruments in Greek and Roman Times, Oxford, 1907, for the Roman medical implement. 150 grams total, 10.7-18.4cm (4 1/4 - 7 1/4"). Property of a London gallery; previously in a private UK collection; acquired in Europe in the 1980s. The Roman nippers, generally used for epilation, generally presented a lock ring from the outside. [5, No Reserve]
